Björn Soenens and his magnificent accident

08 January 2024

“Smoking is a silent killer, I finally got hold of him.”

Björn Soenens is a renowned Belgian journalist and author, known for his work as a US correspondent for VRT and for his insightful books on American history and politics.

For almost 40 years, he smoked as many as 15 cigarettes a day. And had it not been for a chance diagnosis of lung cancer in March 2023, he would still be smoking.

At our Lung Cancer Working Group launch event on 16 November 2023, Björn shared his personal story of diagnosis and treatment, and how the experience paradoxically changed his life for the better. He stressed the importance of life-saving early detection of lung cancer for those at risk. But he did not shy away from taking a hard look at himself as well.
