A new national survey commissioned by All.Can Belgium shows that knowledge of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and its link to cancer remains surprisingly limited in Belgium. More than half of Belgians are unaware that HPV can cause cancer, even though the virus is responsible for more than 1,000 cancer diagnoses in our country every year.
The results also reveal that HPV is still too often associated exclusively with cervical cancer, while the virus affects both women and men and is linked to several different types of cancer. At the same time, the survey shows strong support for prevention, but significant gaps in knowledge and awareness remain.
The survey comes at an important moment, as reimbursement for the HPV vaccine has recently been expanded. The findings highlight the importance of continued efforts in vaccination, screening and public awareness.
With this survey, All.Can Belgium is also launching a new phase of its #GetCheckedEarly awareness campaign, which will focus over the coming months on HPV-related cancers and the importance of prevention and early detection.
